Solar panels are devices that convert light into electricity. They are made up of many thin layers of semi-conducting material, usually silicon. When light strikes the semi-conducting material, an electric field is generated which causes electrons to be knocked loose from their atoms and begin to flow, generating an electric current. This current is then passed through an inverter to convert it from direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC) which can then be used to power homes and businesses.
